|Why||wi-fi community networking|
|Where||Chaosdorf, FNordeingang Neuss|
We promote autonomous networking, install access points, tinker with antennas and write software. It‘s called Freifunk (german for free radio) and is a free software project with a global community and regular local meet-ups.
There are many hackerspaces involved and hundreds of people working on the project. Households and businesses all over the world offer free networking and internet access via Freifunk to their guests.
The software is based on OpenWRT. It offers specialized packages for meshed ad-hoc networks and a custom web frontend. Several editions created by local groups are available.
Goals of the project include spreading knowledge about network technology, sharing network resources in an extended community and encourage social interaction with the neighborhood.
