[edit] Organization
Hacker Dojo is incorporated as a California not-for-profit corporation and is primarily funded by dues paid by its 285 members (as of October 2011), though it has had several commercial sponsors - including both Microsoft and Google. The space opened on September 1, 2009 and is open to all members and their guests. Initially occupying one of four units in the building (140A), the Dojo leased the adjoining 'B' unit in October 2009 and further expanded to the remaining 'C' and 'D' units in October 2011, now occupying the entire building.
[edit] Resources
The majority of the first building is beanbag chairs, desks and tables for light work. Another room (commonly referred to as the Lab or Cave) is filled with electronics equipment such as soldering irons, chips, electrostatic mats, other hardware resources and a CNC mill. Many outside groups host events and lectures on the deck or in the back room. Building B is mostly un-renovated as of October 2009. No resources are currently available for biohacking. The space includes a kitchen and a bread machine which dojo members use to make a great deal of bread. There are a number of small offices to use for brainstorms or private work. Since the 2010 fundraiser, the entire space now has heating and air-conditioning. As of early 2011, there is a now a 100 megabit fiber optic connection with Cisco WiFi access points, providing high-speed, reliable Internet connectivity.
[edit] Community
Hacker Dojo is open to members 24/7 and curious visitors are welcome to visit and take a tour anytime; after 30 days members receive an RFID keycard that can be used to open the front door. The space is usually open to guests from 10AM until 10PM 7 days a week, although frequently members will keep it open throughout the night. A great many of the members are working on startups during daylight hours and use the back offices as carry-in / carry-out office space. Non-work hours are more social and cater more towards events / lectures and people who want to hang out / work on personal projects. There is a regular "happy hour" on Friday nights for members to connect, and the second Wednesday of every month, policy is discussed and voted on by the membership.
