HalifHACKS is an old hackerspace meetup that started in Halifax. Members met in various locations without successfully finding a home base. The original group of have largely moved away or lost interest, but the idea has inspired a new group, Halifax Maker Space with similar goals.

The use of the term hacker, as with all hackerspaces, was used in the context of tinkering with technology and making it do things and be used in ways that were potentially unintended by the original designers. Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker_%28computing%29 for more information if you're not familiar with the broader and more accurate use of the term hacker. The goal of spreading information on security-related topics is to educate people on how to better secure their own technology and infrastructure.

The goal of these meetings was to give people interested in technology, reverse engineering, computer security, programming, hardware and electronics, robot building, making, etc a place to meet up and share ideas, teach one another, and socialize. The goal was to spread information about areas of interest that are often hard to access from people outside smaller groups of specialists, as well as collaborate on projects that people were interested in doing. Anyone interested in learning, participating, and sharing information welcome. For those that aren't familiar with what a hackerspace is, please take a moment to look at some of the other spaces that have been created worldwide and the interesting things they have accomplished.

Some areas the members were interested in included:

  • Computer security
  • Physical security
  • Alternative energy
  • Lock picking
  • Radio hacking
  • Electronics
  • Phreaking
  • RFID hacking
  • Smart card hacking
  • Privacy
